Finding the Right Shoes for your workout: What Works and Why
Choosing the right shoes for your workouts can make a big difference in comfort, stability, and even injury prevention. In CrossFit, we’re doing it all—running, lifting, jumping—so the right shoe can keep you feeling solid. Here’s the rundown on different shoe types and when each one fits best.
Running Shoes: Soft and Supportive, But Not for Lifting
Running shoes are designed to absorb impact, making them perfect for cardio but not so much for lifting. They have softer soles, which help with shock absorption when pounding the pavement. But that same softness means they lack the stability we need for heavy lifts. So, save these for runs or cardio-focused days.
Lifting Shoes: Great for Form, But Easy to Overuse
Lifting shoes, with their elevated heel, let you get into a deep squat and feel more solid during heavy lifts. They’re awesome for max effort days when you’re going for that PR, but wearing them all the time can become a crutch, reducing natural ankle and hip mobility. Use them on your heaviest lifting days, but don’t make them a daily habit—unless you’re like Raphaella, who somehow wears them 90% of the time!
Hybrid Shoes: The All-Rounder for Most Workouts
For most CrossFit workouts, hybrid shoes like Reebok Nano or Nike Metcon are the way to go. They’re firm enough to lift in but flexible enough for running and jumping. I’d say these are the best choice for about 80% of workouts—they’re designed for the range of movements we do daily.
And here’s a tip: Go for a hybrid with a wider toe box. Studies show that narrow shoes can restrict your foot’s natural movement, potentially causing discomfort and issues over time. A wider toe box gives you more room, which is especially helpful during squats and other dynamic movements.
My Top Picks
Personally, I like Reebok Nanos for their versatility, and I’ve recently started using a brand called “While on Earth” that’s quickly becoming my favorite. They’re durable, comfortable, and feel great in any workout.
The Takeaway
Having a couple of different shoes can really level up your training. Grab a pair of hybrids for everyday CrossFit, a running shoe for cardio, and a pair of lifters for heavy days. Trust me, your feet will thank you!
